Kampala Lighting Masterplan – Uganda

Project of Lighting Masterplan for a developing country posed unique challenges and design criteria.

The strategy of the masterplan was to increase lighting coverage from 8 to 100%. On such scale, lighting does not only serve as functionality or aesthetically – it addresses complex sociological, political and environmental issues.

My role was in detailed lighting design for different urban situations in selected case studies, global lighting design and lighting strategy for the whole scope of the City Masterplan, and various on-site engineering and supervising tasks. The work included:

  • Lighting engineering using industry standard software and adjusting to the local conditions
  • Preparing global strategy, maps, and quantity takeout of the luminaries to be installed in the city (preparation for tender)
  • Supervision of the local team performing on-site mission of mapping the city’s infrastructure for the scope of the project
  • Research on feasibility of technology and lighting solutions for the specific conditions and environment
  • Creating tender specification for lighting, technology, and operation strategy
  • Calculation of costs and resources
  • Graphical representation of design
  • On-site assessment of existing lighting conditions and participating in defining working case studies for the Masterplan
  • On-site missions with various stakeholders in Kampala in 2019 and 2020
